Introduced on September 4, 1985, the Israeli New Shekel replaced the old sheqel. Replacing the old shekel on January 1986, at a rate of 1,000 old sheqalim = 1 new shekel. This coin listed here is a 2 New Sheqalim coin.
The 2 New Sheqalim coin is mounted in a 14 kt gold filled handmade bezel. A special gold filled bezel wire is used to make this handmade bezel; the outside wire is rounded while the inside of the wire is grooved so that the coin fits inside the bezel.
Once the bezel wire is cut, the two ends are filed then soldered together using gold solder, then polished to a satin finish. The coin then is placed within the bezel. The top of the bezel is then shaped into a loop to accommodate a gold filled bail. The corrugated decorative bail is 14 kt gold filled.
