A Golden One Dollar Sacagawea Coin Pendant mounted in a 14kt gold filled hand crafted bezel. Minted in 2012. The obverse depicts Sacagawea and the reverse displays a Native American with a horse profile. The coin is mounted so that the Native American with the horse profile in facing outward when worn. An 18 inch 14kt gold filled necklace chain is included.
The Life of Sacagawea was the Shoshone Indian who assisted the historic Lewis and Clark expedition. Between 1804-1806, while still a teenager, she guided the adventurers from the Northern Great Plains to the Pacific Ocean and back. Her husband, Toussaint Charbonneau, and their son who was born during the trip, , Jean Baptiste, also accompanied the group.
Reverse: The reverse design by Thomas Cleveland features a Native American and horse in profile with horses running in the background representing the historical spread of the horse.
Designer, (obverse design): Glenna Goodacre designed the winning obverse image of Sacagawea and her infant son Jean-Baptiste for the Golden Dollar.
Obverse: The Golden Dollar's obverse, or heads, has Sacagawea portrayed in three-quarter profile. In a departure from numismatic tradition, she looks straight at the holder. Glenna Goodacre, the artist of the obverse, included the large, dark eyes attributed to Sacagawea in Shoshone legends. Goodacre used a present-day Shoshone college student, Randy'L He-dow Teton, as her model. On her back, Sacagawea carries Jean Baptiste, her infant son. Six months pregnant when she joined the Lewis and Clark expedition, Sacagawea gave birth to Jean Baptiste early in the journey.
The coins physical makeup is a three-layer clad construction. Copper sandwiched between and metallurgically bonded to outer layers of manganese brass. Manganese brass composition.
