The Euro coin was introduced in 2002. The 1 cent euro coin has a value of one-hundredth of a euro and is made of copper-covered steel. Euro coins have a common reverse and country-specific (national) obverse. This particular coin is the 1 cent German Euro.
The reverse side (common) depicts a globe on the bottom with six fine lines leading to stars on each side of the globe representing the 12 member eurozone (countries that have adopted the Euro as their common currency and sole legal tender). On the top left is a large number 1 followed, in smaller text, by the words "Euro Cent". The common side was designed by Luc Luycx, a Belgian artist who won a Europe-wide competition to design the new coins. The designer's initials, LL, appear to the right of the globe.
The obverse (national) side depicts the oak twig, reminiscent of that found on the current German pfennig coins. It was designed by Professor Rolf Lederbogen. All Euro coins must include twelve stars (in most cases a circle around the edge). The year and mint mark are shown at the bottom. This particular coined was minted in Berlin indicated by the mint mark "A" (Berlin mint) in the year 2002.
