A thoughtful gift for the numismatist. Magnificent and Handsome British coin, The Half Penny with the Golden Hind ship facing forward. Encircled by a high polished 14kt gold filled bezel and bail suspended by an oval link 14kt gold filled chain. Necklace is 18 inch long.
George VI Half Pennies were struck from 1937 until 1952. There are two distinct types to be found caused by differing inscriptions on the obverse coin. The Half Pennies with the First Inscription (GEORGIVS VI D: G: BR: OMN: REX F: D: IND IMP) were struck from 1937 to 1948. After 1948 the title of emperor of India (IND:IMP) was no longer used on the Halfpenny therefore the Half Pence with the Second Inscription were struck from 1949 to 1952.
The Half Penny dates back to before the formation of the English nation. Silver was first used for the striking of Half Pence and Copper was first used in the striking of Half Pence during the Reign of Charles II in the year 1672. Bronze was used as a more hard wearing, longer lasting alternative in 1860 and was used until the Half Penny was removed from circulation in 1984 because of its very low value.
Obverse
The obverse was designed by Thomas Humphrey Paget. In keeping with the old tradition Georges portrait faces to the left, in the opposite direction to his predecessor. George VI portrait depicts him bare headed with no Crown. The inscription on the coin reads: GEORGIVS VI D: G: BR: OMN: REX F: D: IND : IMP
Reverse
The reverse was designed by Thomas Humphrey Paget. The reverse device is the Golden Hind the ship famous for being the one sailed by Sir Francis Drake (an English privateer).
