This is a Buffalo Indian Head Nickel pendant encircled by a handmade 14kt gold filled bezel and connected to a 14kt gold filled 2mm oval link necklace chain that is 18 inches long. This pendant would make a wonderful and thoughtful gift for the numismatists or someone you know with a Native American background.
The Buffalo or Indian Head Nickel coins were minted from 1913 to 1938. The Buffalo nickel eventually was replaced by the United States current nickel, the Jefferson Nickel. These coins like the other nickels are 75% copper and contain 25% nickel.
The Buffalo or Indian Head Nickel is loved by many a coin collector, and for good reason. These coins pay homage to the Native American heritage. Designed by James Earle Fraser created a truly unique design for this coin. Fraser's design accurately portrays Indians as they look, and the obverse portrait was a composite of three chiefs that had posed for him. The American bison or buffalo on the reverse is depicted to represent a distinct American theme. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM are artfully placed over the buffalo, with the denomination FIVE CENTS below. The legend LIBERTY and the date are similarly well executed on the coin's obverse.
